Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids derived from plants. Essential oils were used in ancient Greece and Rome to fight infections and in ancient Egypt for massage and bathing. These essential oils provide both physical and psychological benefits when used safely and correctly. Oils may also be blended together to provide a pleasing aroma. Essential oils are the fragrant and therapeutic essences distilled from herbs, flowers, leaves or bark.

Essential oils are typically extracted from plant matter via steam distillation. Steam distillation is most common, because it only requires heating to just above the boiling point of water, and is considered gentle enough for most essential oils.

Aromatherapy has its roots in antiquity with the use of aromatic oils. Aromatherapy has been used to restore vitality and incite passion for centuries. Essential oils work most effectively when they are combined with a diffuser. Diffusers make great gifts for the home, office or any location. Essential oils should not be taken internally as they may be toxic if swallowed. Essential oils are flammable, and should be kept away from heat sources not specifically designed for their safe use.

Essential oils do not need to have any specific chemical properties in common, beyond conveying characteristic fragrances. Essential oils have the scent of the plant from which they were distilled. Various essential oils have been used medicinally at different periods in history. Aromatherapy should not replace proper health care but enhance it.

Aromatherapy is a branch of alternative medicine and claims that aromas from essential oils have curative benefits.
