Creating a Relaxing Meditation Environment

You don’t need a lot of stuff to meditate effectively, just an isolated room. But some people like a few extras to enhance their surroundings and help calm them down. Here are some tips to help you create a meditation room that’s the ultimate in relaxation.

Once you have a space in your home that you have established as your meditation room, you can start setting the mood. For starters, make sure there’s no clutter so it’s as stress free as possible. Make sure your room has enough space for comfortable seating arrangements. This could be a chair, cushion, mat or bench. Another popular choice are meditation chairs. They help to keep your back upright and stop you from slouching while you’re meditating.

A couple of small tables will be very useful in your meditation room. These can hold candles, incense or a CD player. You can also place photos or artwork on these tables. Images of nature such as the ocean, rainforest, mountains or clouds are very relaxing for many people.

You should also consider the lighting in the room so you create a suitable environment. Try installing a dimmer on your light switch or lamp. Candles placed throughout the room are another good option. Scented candles in particular can be a wonderful mood enhancer. But if you already have incense burning, stick with unscented candles or you’ll have too many competing aromas.

Your music player can be used to play either soft music or sounds of nature. The sounds of whales, water music or the wind whistling through the trees are all soothing sounds. Keep experimenting until you find the perfect relaxing sounds that don’t distract you.

The use of incense and scented candles can be overpowering for some people, so why not use flowers instead. Fill a simple vase with flowers that you bought at the florist or that you cut from your garden. Many people find that the smell of flowers does a lot to bring a sense of calm to the room.

If you travel regularly, you can continue your routine by taking your meditation gear with you. Buy an inflatable cushion and some travel candles and pack them in your luggage. Upload your favorite meditation music to your iPod, and you’ll have everything you need to practice your meditation techniques.

When you create a relaxing environment, it’s easy to close your eyes, clear your mind and then leave feeling completely refreshed.
