As the speed of life gets faster and we all lead busier and busier lives so we tend to neglect both our physical and mental health and we are all now suffering from stress to some degree. It is not surprising therefore that we find ourselves turning increasingly to ancient practice of meditation.

Because of its proven record of effectiveness, meditation today is being practiced not merely to still the mind and reduce levels of stress but also to cure an ever widening range of physical conditions.

Indeed there are several physical benefits to be derived from meditation which reduces the heart rate and consequently pressure on the heart, reduces levels of the ’stress’ hormone cortisol and other chemicals in the body that are associated with stress and reduces free radicals in the body thereby further helping to reduce blood pressure. Meditation also increases the flow of oxygen through the lungs to aid breathing and can even raise levels of DHEA to help slow the aging process.

As far as its psychological benefits, meditation lowers irritability and anxiety and improves memory and thus your ability to learn. Accordingly, it also gives rise to a positive outlook on life giving you a feeling of rejuvenation and youthfulness.

A few other significant benefits of meditation exercises include:

* Producing a complete relaxation of not merely the body and mind but also of your psyche.

* Helping with the treatment of a number of illnesses for which there is a connection between the physical nature of the illness and the emotional state of the sufferer.

* Creating an opening of the door into the ‘inner self’ thus releasing our innate creativity.

* Producing an enhancement to our natural self-confidence leading to a stronger and more dominant sense of will power.

* Creating an increase in levels of energy which make it easier to tackle the strains of life.

* Providing a greater ability to deal with various addictions and vices ranging from alcohol and tobacco to narcotics.

And so the list goes on.

However, just like everything else meditation can be a powerful force for good when it is used correctly but it can also cause more problems than it solves if it is not used correctly. The secret therefore is to understand exactly what guided meditation can and cannot do and to learn the art of meditation before you add daily meditation into your normal pattern of life.
